About the project

The BESS is allocated at 57 Burgess Lane, also known as 474 Calala Lane, Calala, within the Tamworth Local Government Area (LGA) and has a storage capacity up to 300MW and 1200MWh discharge capacity, enough power to supply electricity for 570,000 homes for four hours. The BESS site will be connected to NSW’s electricity grid via a transmission line that connects to the 330kV Tamworth Substation. The BESS will create approximately 170 full times jobs during construction and 7 during operations as well as funding community programs. The development was classified as SSDA as it was for the purpose of electricity generating works with a Capital Investment Value (CIV) exceeding $30 million, pursuant to
Section 20 of Schedule 1 of State Environmental Planning Policy (Planning Systems) 2021.

Mecone was responsible for preparing the Scoping Report to accompany the request for the Secretary’s Environmental Assessment Requirements (SEARs), attendance at the scoping meeting, preparation of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), engagement and coordination of all consultants, liaison with the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (DPHI) Energy Assessments Team, project management, and lodgement of the SSDA.
