The Wollongong Health Precinct (WHP) is a strategic health and education precinct identified to accommodate a concentration of medical, research and associated uses, alongside a growing worker, student and residential population. Led by the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure, with Atlas Economics as lead consultant, the project supports a State-led rezoning process by refining the Wollongong Health Precinct Strategy Structure Plan, facilitating increased housing supply and strengthening the region's role in healthcare and innovation.

About the project
Mecone is supporting the project through strategic planning, social infrastructure and open space needs analysis to help deliver an evidence-based, coordinated and place-responsive outcome. The Social Infrastructure Needs Assessment informs the Indicative Layout Plan (ILP) by identifying the open space and social infrastructure required to support future residential and employment growth, drawing on demographic trends, policy benchmarks and spatial analysis. A key focus is identifying a balanced and deliverable approach to open space and community infrastructure within a constrained inner-city precinct.
Mecone provided a number of planning services including:
- Social Infrastructure and Open Space Needs Assessment to inform the Indicative Layout Plan (ILP)
- Iterative input to the detailed design process through a series of Enquiry by Design workshops
- Demographic, policy benchmarking and spatial analysis of community facilities, health and support services, education and training spaces, and local, district and regional open space
- Recommendations on the capacity, distribution, accessibility and delivery of social infrastructure and open space
