About the project

Mecone was engaged by Tricon Group Pty Ltd to manage a Competitive Design Alternatives Process at the site 410 Pitt Street, Haymarket. The Competitive Process related to the proposed redevelopment of the site, for the design of a new hotel with associated café/restaurant. The site provided a unique opportunity to develop a new, high quality hotel within the Pitt Street locality whilst integrating a significant new building typology (the ‘pencil tower’), the first of its kind in the city. Of the four (4) architectural firms invited to compete in the process, the Durbach Block Jaggers scheme was selected by the Selection Panel as the preferred scheme. This scheme comprised:

  • A total of 178 hotel rooms with threestorey lobby providing an active frontage that was housed behind the existing street façade with hanging lounges and grand sinking stair, administrative spaces, meeting rooms and roof terrace at level 6.
  • Courtyards and garden walls were also integrated into the design with a ‘hammam’ and plunge pool, spa and sauna, sundecks and flying balcony located on the rooftop to maximise views over the city skyline.
