Mecone welcomes the release of the draft Sydney Plan for comment.

The Plan supports the NSW Government’s goal to streamline the planning system and fast track development approvals by focusing on seven key priorities – providing clear direction on the key planning matters that will support new jobs and housing. The plan represents a major step forward for strategic planning for the state – and, importantly, delivers a clear policy direction on affordable housing to help create a more equitable and sustainable Sydney.

Key priorities of the draft Plan:
• Implementation of the 5-year housing targets and promoting housing diversity and choice across Sydney
• Securing the supply of affordable housing to create a more equitable and sustainable Sydney
•Growing well-located jobs and aligning infrastructure to planned growth across the city
•Creating a more vibrant Sydney – ensuring increased density comes with increased infrastructure and amenity
• Securing an ongoing pipeline of productive industrial lands – creating jobs, investment, and innovation while supporting housing construction.
•Minimising the impact of natural hazards and protecting the natural environment.

Mecone also welcomes the release of the discussion paper on a New Approach to Strategic Planning (https://www.planningportal.nsw.gov.au/draftplans/exhibition/new-approach-strategic-planning-discussion-paper). The proposed three-tiered framework will provide a more consistent and simpler approach to strategic planning across the State. As strong supporters of strategic planning, Mecone is encouraged to the see the NSW Government’s commitment to clarity, coordination and long-term thinking in progressing its reform agenda.
