South West Rail Link Extension

The South West Rail Link (SWRL) is currently one of Sydney’s largest infrastructure projects consisting of a new 11.4km rail line from Glenfield to Leppington and two new rail stations located at Edmondson Park and Leppington.

The potential future provision of an extension to the South West Rail Link will be a key piece of transport infrastructure to service the sub-region. This proposed transport link has been identified in the Long Term Transport Master Plan and the Broader Western Sydney Employment Area Structure Plan.

Mecone was engaged by TfNSW to prepare a scoping study and undertake Stage 1 planning investigations to identify potential corridor alignments and station opportunities for the extension of the SWRL to support the significant growth targeted for Western Sydney and the South West subregion.

Scope of Works

Mecone’s involvement included initial planning advice on the key project stages and milestones and the preparation of a scoping study. Mecone was subsequently engaged to undertake planning investigations to identify potential corridor options for protection. The scope of works included:

  • Review of strategic context and previous alignment studies;
  • Identification of high level constraints and opportunities;
  • Development of potential options;
  • Multi-criteria assessment of options;
  • Identification of potential options for integration with the rest of the transit network;
  • Liaison with the various internal and external stakeholders;
  • Presentations to TfNSW and DP&E executives; and
  • Preparation of a Planning Study report.
